The Uganda Medical Association was on 30th December 2020 saddened by the loss two great medical practitioners in a time span of less than 24 hours, Dr. Charles Kiggundu and Dr. Alfred Kigozi. The two doctors succumbed to COVID-19.
Dr. Fred Kigozi M.D was a Senior Consultant Psychiatrist and also a former Director in Butabika National Referral & Teaching Hospital, Kampala.
Dr. Kiggundu was a consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist and former President of the Association of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Uganda and a “real advocate for reproductive health and post-abortion care.
Dr. Richard Idro, the president of the Uganda Medical Association said Dr. Kiggundu was the consultant on duty at Kawempe Hospital close to the time of his death. He said he died on Tuesday.
“Before we could take a breath, news filtered of the death of Dr.Kigozi, Senior Consultant Psychiatrist and former Director of Butabika hospital.” Dr. Richard Idro said.
His death proceeds a growing concern for the safety of medicalpractitioners working in COVID-19 facilities with fervent complaints about lack of PPE and other essentials in the treatment of Covid-19 patients.
Dr. Kiggundu was a Board Member for CEHURD Uganda. The organization revealed through its social media pages the sad news of his death last night.
“With deep sorrow, CEHURD mourns the death of its Board Member. Dr. Charles Kiggundu has been an ally, an SRHR champion and a source of wisdom in advancing maternal health rights in Uganda,” CEHURD announced.
He will be remembered for his consistent clarion call for better maternal health service. Just a few days ago, he was trying to secure an ambulance for a mother in distress.
