News just in confirms that the Uganda Prisons Service have recorded their first novel coronavirus case. This is according to a statement from the Prisons Spokesperson Frank Beine.
While addressing the press on Wednesday in Kampala, Mr Beine revealed that the suspect has been in isolation at their centre in Kawuti Prison, Namutumba in Eastern Uganda.
“He was in isolation and at the same time, his people had secured his release from prison. [However] because of what is going on, we were unable to hand him over to his relatives and gave him in to the Ministry of Health and is under treatment in Jinja.” Beine said.
At the end of 2010, the Prison Service had enlisted some 2,100 inmates for presidential pardon in a bid to decongest the prison facilities. As of June 10th, 2020 Uganda has 665 positive cases of COVID-19, 118 recoveries and no related deaths.
