Authorities in the Kabale District Health Department are concerned about
the reduction of men and women who use condoms in the district. According to statistics from the district health department, 117 females used female condoms while 13,746 used male condoms from January to August this year. The number was recorded across public health facilities in the district.
Statistics indicate that 106 female condoms were used from January to
March, one female condom was used from April to June and 10 female condoms were used from July to August this year. It also indicate that 10,726 male condoms were used from January to March, 2,499 male
condoms were used from April to June and 521 condoms were used July to
August.
The acting Kabale District Health Officer Dr. Alfred Besigensi told our reporter that the number of men and females using condoms has reduced
compared last year where over 150 females used female condoms while
15,746 used male condoms from January to August.
Besigensi blamed the increasing teenage pregnancies in the district to failure by the men and girls to use condoms. He also said that unprotected sex poses the partners to sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV/AIDS and asked political and religious leaders to encourage the public to embrace use of condoms.
Kabale district has registered 2,618 cases of teenage pregnancies in the last seven months. The cases were registered across both private and health facilities between January and July this year from a total of 17,309 of pregnancies.
