Ever since Uganda recorded its 1st case of the ass-whooping corona virus, vendors around Kampala having been taking this situation as golden opportunity to harvest and exploit citizens by exponentially increasing the prices of food stuffs and hand sanitizers.
1 liter of sanitizer that was recently at ugx 10,000 is now ugx 100,000 and more in some pharmacies and shops around Kampala suburbs. This has tempted local manufactures to engineer new sanitizers whose effecttiveness, the population isn’t sure of.
Kudos to the government for cracking deals with reputable alcohol manufacturers to divert over 1M liters of Ethanol to manufacturing hand sanitizers.
From a few surveys we made around local shops, the price of salt that was then ugx 700 is now ugx 2500 and more, sugar that was around ugx 3,500 is now ugx 4,500. Same applies to soap, rice and maize flour.
This was attributed to high demand as many Ugandans are stocking variety of food stuff to take them through the crisis in case of any lock down.
We however urge Ugandans to keep safe, wash their hands with soap regularly, practice social distancing and follow preventive measures as stipulated by the Ministry of Health.
