The number of teenage pregnancies registered by the Kabale District Health
Department in the last nine months has reached 5000 cases according to
the Kabale District Health Officer, Dr. Alfred Besigensi.
Besigensi revealed this yesterday while speaking during People’s Parliament that was organized by NTV Uganda in conjunction with Reproductive Health Uganda at Kabale District Lukiiko Hall in Kabale district.
The sitting was aimed at reminding the policy makers of their role in promoting sex education among young children.
According to Besigensi, the cases were registered from January to September this year across both private and health facilities in the district and most of the affected teenagers are aged between 18-19 years.
He also said that from January to September, they registered 20 teenage abortions and appealed to parents to return to their role of parenting.
The DHO also says that they have started sensitizing the public about how it is normal for any female who has reached puberty stage to access family
planning services.
Speaking in the sitting session, Justus Tindyebwa, a volunteer Member of
Reproductive Health Uganda, Kabale Branch expressed the need for the media to sensitize the teenagers on the dangers of early pregnancies.
