The National Water and Sewerage Corporation has disconnected water supply to Luzira Prisons Complex due to an outstanding water bill of Shs 18,272,450,274.
According to Uganda Prisons, the disconnection occurred despite the Ministry of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development (MoFPED) releasing Shs. 2,355,351,000 in the first quarter of FY 2024/25, which is part of the budgeted Shs. 7,996,253,000 that has already been remitted to NWSC.
“This situation is a matter of national concern,” said Frank Baine, Prisons Spokesperson, noting that the Uganda Prisons Service (UPS) is currently utilizing water bowsers to mitigate the water crisis.
Meanwhile, he revealed that negotiations are ongoing between Ministry of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Uganda Prisons Service and National Water and Sewerage Corporation to restore the water situation to normal.
He called for calm amongst the affected prisoners and staff as long-term solutions are being sought.
