The NRM Deputy Secretary General, Rt. Hon. Namayanja Rose Nsereko, has launched a model demonstration farm in Mpwedde Parish, Nakaseke District. This initiative aims to uplift local communities by enhancing agricultural productivity and creating job opportunities, aligning with the NRM’s mission of socioeconomic transformation and wealth creation.
Addressing over 80 local leaders, Namayanja emphasized the farm’s educational role. “This farm is here to teach our farmers how to produce more and earn better incomes. Our goal is for every household in Nakaseke to improve their earnings and quality of life,” she said.
Namayanja further noted that the farm is a practical example of how effective agricultural practices can generate substantial income. Being a native of Mpwedde Parish, she recognizes the potential of local farmers while also identifying gaps in knowledge regarding best agronomic practices and sustainable agriculture techniques.
The model farm features diverse agricultural activities, including banana plantations, coffee nurseries, fruit tree cultivation, and the growing of vegetables and Hass avocados.
It also utilizes innovative, cost-effective irrigation methods, such as harvested rainwater. “We want to demonstrate that even small-scale farming, such as on two acres, can be profitable,” Namayanja explained. “With the support of the Ministry of Agriculture, we plan to establish similar model farms in every constituency within Greater Luwero.”
The project in Mpwedde Parish alone is expected to benefit 1,671 households, with a particular focus on engaging youth in productive agriculture.
“By involving young people in agriculture, we not only boost their incomes but also help them find purpose and direction,” Namayanja emphasized.
Currently, the farm operates with support from the Uganda Coffee Development Authority. Farm manager Mr Musinguzi Yonas highlighted the importance of sustainable agriculture and entrepreneurship. “This farm is a vehicle for community transformation, aimed at ensuring food security and increasing household incomes. We will work closely with community leaders to make this vision a reality,” Yonas stated.
Plans include expanding into commercial livestock farming, with advanced poultry and dairy goat operations. Additionally, a skilling centre will be established to create employment opportunities for youth and women, offering training in various areas such as sowing, ploughing, and catering.
Community leaders, including Mrs Betty Sserunkuma, a councillor from Kasangombe Sub-County, have commended Namayanja’s initiative. “This farm will set a new standard for leadership and community engagement. It will show our youth that agriculture can be a profitable and rewarding career,” Sserunkuma said.
The launch of the model farm also marks the beginning of a 1.5-acre pilot project aimed at showcasing the potential of small-scale farming. Local leaders are fully supportive, ensuring the farm meets the community’s needs and sets a benchmark for future agricultural projects in Nakaseke.
This initiative, under the Rose Namayanja Foundation, underscores NRM’s ongoing commitment to modernizing agriculture, reducing poverty, and promoting wealth creation in rural Uganda.
