Local leaders and women in Buhara Sub County of Kabale District have blamed the increasing cases of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in the sub county to alcoholism, poverty and lack of faithfulness among married couples.
They revealed this today while speaking during a community dialogue that
was held at St. Peters Muyebe Church of Uganda in Buhara Sub County, Kabale District, organized by Forum for Women in Democracy – FOWODE, a women’s rights national non-partisan organization, that offers a platform for Ugandan women’s learning, networking, sharing experiences and advocating for gender equity and equality in decision making processes.
According to the Buhara Sub County Community Development Officer, Liberty Kasende, her office has so far recorded more than 50 cases of GBV between January and November this year compared to less than forty cases that were recorded last year.
The local leaders, who include, the Buhara Sub County LCIII Chairperson, Joseph Baryamujura and Betty Masiko, a councilor of Muyebe parish, Jane
Kyomuhangi, Adrine Bagyiraitima among others said that most cases of GBV are as a result of alcoholism, lack of faithfulness and poverty among
married couples.
They said that this has resulted into children going on streets due to lack of parental care, teenage girls going into marriages they are not prepared for.
The FOWODE Field Officer for the Kabale office, Dorothy Kesiime Naturinda, said that they will continue sensitizing the residents about the dangers of GBV in families and how it affects children in future.
