53 people in Tanzania have tested positive for the novel coronavirus today Friday, April 17th, 2020. This is according to the Health Minister Ummy Mwalimu.
The new additions add the total COVID-19 cases in the largest East African country to 147. As if that is not enough, Tz also registered a new coronavirus related death today, bring their total deaths to 5.
“The infections are all of Tanzanians; 38 are in Dar es Salaam, 10 in Zanzibar, 1 Kilimanjaro, 1 Mwanza, 1 Pwani, 1 Lindi and 1 Kagera.” Ms Mwalimu said at a press conference.
Tanzania has been in the spotlight over their prior approach to the deadly respiratory infection. Their president, Pombe Magufuli, initially wanted members to continue praying in churches.
He cited that God has power of the virus and that they’d defeat it with continued prayers, something that was against the set WHO guidelines as regards social distancing.
