Yesterday 17th March 2020, was the climax of a two day National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) conference that was held at Hotel Africana Kampala.
The conference was running on theme “Higher education and the private sector Engagement: Preparing Uganda’s Human Capital for the 4th Industrial revolution.”
It was officially opened by Hon. John C Muyingo the State Minster for Higher Education, in presence were heads of higher academic institutions in Uganda, both government and private sector officials among others.
In his opening remarks, Minister Muyingo explained that even though there are still some challenges in the Information Technology (IT) sector such as high internet costs, inadequate infrastructure and shortage of IT experts in the country, the government is doing what it can to provide a favorable environment for the education sector to implement the new curriculum that is targeted to solve all the above obstacles.
NCHE Executive Director Prof Mary Okwakol said the Council is inspecting all higher academic institutions in the country to identify their abilities as far as teaching technology is concerned.
“The NCHE survey is done to grade institutions and to see how they can be assisted in order to produce graduates that are skilled and innovators to compete on both national and international market’’ Prof Okwakol explained.
At the same event, Makerere university vice chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe, chaired a session about the use of artificial intelligence in education.
