Kampala, Uganda – 8 victims namely; Bob Barigye, Alphonse Nkurunziza, Vicent Lubega Nsamba, Gerald Wenani, David Musiri, Sanya Ivan Elivis, Debbo Sean Tevin and Ssekandi Eric. of police brutality have taken legal action against the Government of Uganda and 10 police officers for violating their human rights. These claim numerous illegal arrests, detentions and others. The 8 are part of over 192 human rights defenders including youth, students, civil society groups, oil affected communities, and others involved in campaigns with efforts to promote human and environmental rights who have continued to suffer various violations. Police have revealed that during the week of July 7 -13, 2024, 81 people died and 301 sustained injuries. Among the dead were 35 motorcyclists, 28 pedestrians, 13 passengers on motor cycles, 03 pedal cyclists, 01 Driver & 01 other. Crashes on motor cycles, both riders and passengers accounted for 59% of the total death followed by pedestrians who contributed to 35%. Police attributed the major causes of the road crashes to careless overtaking, contributing 31% of the total crashes, followed by speeding with 19% of the total crashes.

President William Ruto has dissolved his Cabinet, sending home all Cabinet Secretaries and the attorney general. Ugandan court has sentenced a 24-year-old man to six years in prison for insulting the president and the first family through his video posted on TikTok. Edward Awebwa was charged with hate speech and spreading “misleading and malicious” information against President Yoweri Museveni, First Lady Janet Museveni and son Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who is the head of the military.
