Isaiah Mpiirwomugisha, a 23 year old first year student at Makerere University, has today been nominated to contest for Member of Parliament (MP) in the newly created Buhweju West Constituency.
The fresher, is studying Land Economics and sleeps in Makerere’s University Hall (UH) with the experience of just one complete semester at the oldest university in Uganda.
The race that has attracted upto five aspirants at the moment even has former MP Ephraim Biraaro that is believed to be well over 60 years of age.
“I highly believe that I shall swear in as MP for Buhweju West come May 2021 because the electorate believe me. The Banyankole say “omushojwa guchumita gukiri muto” literally meaning that the people are more resourceful when still young. I am here to urge my fellow Banyabuhweju to tick Mpiirwomugisha Isaiah on the ballot.” He said in a phone interview.
Contesting under Gen. Mugisha Muntu’s Alliance for National Transformation (ANT), Mpiirwomugisha says the main challenge he is facing is finances because he is properly equipped like his opponent’s to meet the campaign’s resource envelope.
“The main bottleneck that I have found so far is monetization of politics. This is a great challenge to the youths because we are still young financially which is not the case with the older people. It is taking a lot of my time to explain the effects of using money in politics to the locals, but am trying my level best.” He said.
