According to statistics from the health department of Kabale district, SOME 93 cases of Tuberculosis (TB) were registered across both private and health facilities between January and August this year from a total of 24,023 people who were screened for the disease.

Statistics indicate that from January to March, 37 cases were registered, from April to June, 41 cases were recorded and 15 cases were recorded from July to August this year.

They also show that out of 24,023 people who were screened for tuberculosis, 830 people were suspected to be having the disease.

The acting Kabale District Health Officer (DHO) Alfred Besigensi, said that the cases have increased compared to less than 70 cases that were registered last year.

Dr. Besigensi said that the increase was escalated by the COVID-19 lockdown where people were reluctant to visit health facilities due to lack of public transport.

He urged local and opinion leaders at all levels to carry out sensitization programmes on what TB is and how it spreads as ‘that is the only way to fight the disease.’
