The State Minister for Labour and Rushenyi County Member of Parliament Hon. Mwesigwa Rukutana has been granted bail and is out of prison, we can confirm.

Sent to Kyamugorani Prison in Kakiika Mbarara a week ago, the Minister has today been released on a Shs 4M cash bail by the Ntungamo Chief Magistrate.

His friends, including former Information Minister Jim Muhwezi, Michael Mawanda the Igara East MP, and businessman Bob Kabonero were his sureties to secure bail.

The Minister was first remanded last week by the Grade One Magistrate’s Court on charges of attempted murder, assault, malicious damage, and threatening violence.

Along with three of his bodyguards Rukutana was arrested when a video circulated of him grabbing a gun from the guards and threatening to shoot at opposition supporters.

It was also alleged that he had shot in the head and killed a supporter of his opponent’s, an allegation that was since cleared when it was discovered that the said man was alive and he claimed stone injuries.

Ms Naome Kabasharira, a former Ntungamo MP, by press time during the NRM Primaries in Rushenyi was ahead of Minister Rukutana even though she hasn’t been formally declared.
