Postpone 2021 Presidential Elections – Mao

Norbert Mao, the Democratic Party (DP) president general wants the forthcoming 2021 Presidential and General elections postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Mao, a lawyer and former presidential aspirant (2011) argues that the nation is not ready for the elections and that the voting can only take place at such a time when the law to accommodate the “scientific” elections has been reviewed.

According to our sources inside the DP, Chairman Mao yesterday met the newly elected Chairman of the Inter-Party Organisation for Dialogue (IPOD), Asuman Basalirwa of the Justice Forum (JEEMA) and the two discussed the possibility of advocating for the postponement of the election.

Mao is reportedly courting Basalirwa to have all IPOD members speak out with one voice against the Electoral Commission’s roadmap that calls for online campaigns without close contact with the voters.

“Free and fair elections call for physical interface between the voters and candidates, if this can’t happen due to the COVID-19 pandemic then elections have to be postponed.” Mao is quoted to say.

DP, the oldest party in the country has not fronted a substantial candidate for president since 2011. In 2016, they backed Go Forward’s John Patrick Amama Mbabazi, a former Prime Minister in President Museveni’s government.
